The window for submitting Out of Attendance Waivers is March 1 - June 30.
All families who plan to submit a request need to be aware of the following provisions:
Waivers can only be granted if enrollment numbers of the receiving school do not exceed building capacity or class cap. Due to our growing enrollment, new waiver applications have not been granted for several years. Families should not assume that approval of a submitted request will be granted.
Exceptions to school attendance areas are granted for one (1) school year. The application window is March 1st through June 30th annually. Requests will be reviewed on a first come, first served basis. Traditionally, earlier requests have a greater chance of being approved.
Requests submitted based on childcare needs will only be considered for elementary school students. Childcare issues will not be considered for students grades six through twelve (6-12).
If a family moves from one attendance area to another within the school system during the school year, the pupil may continue in the school in which he or she was last enrolled provided no hardships are created and approval has been granted by the Principals and the Director of Student Services/ Director of Pupil Personnel. Transportation arrangements shall be made by the parents or guardian at no expense to the SCPS Board of Education.
Attendance and behavior shall be considered when requests for change in school assignment are submitted. Students who are granted approval of an Out of Attendance request are responsible for maintaining exemplary grades, behavior and attendance.
We currently are not accepting waiver applications for students who do not reside in Shelby County.
Please feel free to contact Mike Clark, Director of Student Services, with any questions regarding these provisions at (502) 633-2375.
