Fifth Annual K4C Construction Career Days
HOSA members participated in the construction fair at the Shelby County Fairground in Shelbyville, Kentucky. This took place on September 30th – October 1st 2009. HOSA contributed by providing blood pressure checks for who attended. We not only represented HOSA, but we also represent our Health Science class. We also manned the concession stand and split the profits with FBLA and SKILLS USA. “In my opinion, it is important for my students to be here participating because they can practice their skills, and help educate others to become aware of the risks of high blood pressure. This is important in living a healthy life.”
Smile Dr. Kirby is here!
On October 29th, 2009 pediatric dentist, Dr. Kirby Hoetker, shared with HOSA students about dental careers. She discussed how she participates in the Smile Kentucky program. She helps third, fourth, and fifth graders. The Smile Kentucky program provides assistance for children who do not have dental coverage. Dr. Kirby visits all of the Shelby County elementary schools to perform dental screenings. Educational programs about dental hygiene also will be conducted in classrooms and gymnasiums. Free dental-care kits will also be given away.
Did Someone Call For a Mock Disaster?
Indeed someone did! On November 14th, 2009 HOSA students participated in the mock disaster training drill as victims, family members, and residents. The American Red Cross, Shelby County EMS, Bagdad Fire Department, HAZMAT Responders, The Federal Railroad Safety Board, and STAT Flight Personnel responded to the mock derailment in order to prepare should an event take place, they will be prepared!
Pennies for Patients
January 20th, 2010 our local HOSA chapter voted to participate in the fund raising effort for Pennies for Patients, Leukemia Lymphoma Society. Each member received a box and everyone emptied out their wallets and change in the boxes. We got off to a great start. We will be collecting money until March 9, 2010. It now has become a slight competition between the classes to see who can raise the most, so we will see how it turns out.
