Parents can view their child's GSSP (Gifted Student Service Plan) by going to the Career Cruising website:  www.careercruising.com/ILP. Each parent has a username and password to access their child's information.  Please call the office to get your username and password.  The GSSP will be updated with current activities by January of 2012.  This will enable you to view your child's TAG services progress.  Please notify me if you have any questions or concerns.

Kentucky Night at the Museum for 7th grade in Chicago, IL

7th Grade students from East Middle School attended the 5th annual Kentucky Night at the Museum in Chicago, IL.  The trip took place on Friday, Nov. 4, 2011.  Students rode a coach bus to Chicago, toured the city and Field Museum and then spend the night at the Museum of Science and Industry.  Students returned on Sat., Nov. 5.

KYA

16 TAG 6th and 7th grade students attended the Central Region KYA Conference on Nov. 17-19 and were given the Delegation of Excellence award for their outstanding work on their bills, their debating skills and their behavior.  At the 3-day conference, East Middle students presented 3 bills.  The bill presented by Alexis Smith, Erin Bailey, Dakota Hawkins and Allison Rose to require all resturants to include calorie and carb counts on their menus was passed in second committee and presented to the governor.  They also won an Outstanding Bill award for their work.

Jack Dorman, Alexeia Casillas, Mikaela Bertholf, and Danielle McKinley presented a bill on a proposal to get all Kentuckians to recycle bottles and cans.  Their bill was presented at the Capitol in Frankfort, but was defeated by a narrow margin.

River Fuchs, Cameron Hedden, Cameron Glass, Lauren DeEsch, Caroline Shy, Claire Dale, Zach Muniz and Mattie Roach worked on a bill to require senior citizens to retake the drivers test every 5 years.  Although the students gave a great presentation, their bill was also defeated in second committee.

Claire Dale also participated as a media corp reporter and wrote an article for the Daily Delegate newsletter.  Caroline Shy acted as parlimentarians at the Capitol in Frankfort.

River Fuchs and Jack Dorman were awarded the Oustanding Speaker award and Alexis Smith was awarded the Outstanding Delegate Award.

Don't forget that KUNA is March 406, 2012!  Students will be learning about and signing up for KUNA (Kentucky United Nations Conference) in January!

The TAG art, drama and dance students attended a workshop at the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft on Oct. 14th.  At the workshop they created a 'proverb staff' based on an African proverb that had special meaning for them.  These staffs will be used in our African Folktale presentation that the students are planning from Dec. - Jan.

The East and West Middle School TAG Leadership students focused on “Leading through Serving” by collecting books for Reading Reindeer, toys for Toys for Tots, and making scarves for the residents of Crestview Nursing Home.  Some students even distributed the gifts at Crestview while singing Christmas Carols with the residents.

Students are reminded that Y Club participants will be required to perform 4 hours of community service by March 2012.  We will offer some opportunities for service activities throughout the school year.  In addition, service can be done outside of school with a signed note and explanation (preferably service done outside of the home).  Students can ask Mrs. Walther beforehand if a service project can count towards the 4 hour requirement.
