Aaron Bitzer was sitting and chatting with friends during his lunch hour when he was called forward over the microphone by Shelby County High School Principal Eddie Oakley, left. The freshman's cheeks turned slightly pink, not knowing the reason for his being singled out. Then it became obvious: Superintendent James Neihof, right, commended him for having perfect attendance during the recent three-week incentive campaign. His name was placed in a drawing with all over secondary students (middle and high school) who came to school, were not late, did not leave early and had no discipline referrals. Aaron's attendance habits are exemplary since he has not missed a day since starting at SCHS as an eighth-grader. He smiled and said, "I may have only missed a couple in elementary."

Shelby County High School has received national certification for its Project Lead The Way (PLTW) program that it has been offering since 2010. PLTW, a nonprofit organization and the nation’s leading provider of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education programs, offers a rigorous curriculum that allows students to apply what they learn in math and science class to real-life biomedical sciences projects. Eddie Oakley, principal of Shelby County High School, said, “We’ve seen how the PLTW program draws more students into the biomedical sciences and gets them thinking about college and their careers. We are extremely proud to be PLTW certified and ecstatic that our students are eligible for college-level recognition, which may include college credit for select PLTW courses, scholarships and admissions preference.” Balfour will deliver Senior Announcements during lunch on Monday, April 30th.
