Dress Code for 2012-2013
Shelby County High School Dress Code
In the interest of promoting a safe, united and orderly learning environment, students are to adhere to the following as it pertains to their daily appearance. All students are expected to adhere to common practice of modesty, cleanliness and neatness and to dress in such a manner as to contribute to the academic atmosphere. Any clothing, object, or writing on clothing that refers to alcohol, tobacco, drugs, gangs, sexual innuendos, foul language, or is otherwise disruptive to the educational process is prohibited.
PANTS
Students may wear pants, shorts, capris, skorts, or skirts. These may be dress twill, cargo, chino, or Dockers style only in any color or pattern.
Yoga pants, sweat pants, “jeggings” are NOT permitted.
Length of skirts, skorts and shorts must be appropriate for school attire.
Tights, leggings, or stockings are allowed under all bottoms.
Must be free of rips and tears.
Must cover midriff, underwear and backside at all times regardless of movement.
Students may earn the right to wear jeans on a given date determined by administration for a variety of reasons (i.e. good attendance, etc.).
TOPS
Students may wear any color or patterned long sleeved or short sleeved top (t-shirt, sweater, sweatshirt).
Must cover frontside, back, and chest at all times.
Students may wear jackets and coats in the classroom at the discretion of the teacher.
FOOTWEAR
Footwear must be worn at all times. No house slippers unless pre-approved by the administration.
ACCESSORIES
No dangerous jewelry such as dog collars, wallet chains, belt chains, spike jewelry, etc. are permitted.
Head coverings such as hats, caps, scarves, bandanas, sweatbands, and doo-rags must not be worn from 7:30 a.m.-3:20 p.m. unless such attire is a recognized part of a religious practice adhered by the student or is prescribed by a physician.
Sunglasses are not to be worn or to be visible inside the building unless ordered by a physician.
ENFORCEMENT
The school administration shall have the right to evaluate any clothing to determine its acceptability within the guidelines of the dress code. Administrators shall also have the right to makean interpretation on the decency and appropriateness of any garment. Staff members are responsible for enforcing the dress code. Refusal to adhere to the dress code will result in disciplinary consequences. Any head covering worn during the school day will be confiscated and returned at dismissal on Friday afternoons.
