Dear Southside Parents/Guardians,

Shelby County Public Schools will soon enter into our second MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) window for student testing.  The MAP test is completed on the computer by each student three times a year and helps us to evaluate student learning and growth in reading, math and language arts.  The results help us best group students for instruction and provide “just right” lessons.  At Southside we will test all students in Reading prior to Winter Break.  Following the break, all students will be tested in math and grades 2-5 in language arts .  I ask that you talk with your child about the importance of doing his/her best on the MAP test.

We know that when we take a break from school, such as our upcoming Winter Break, many students slip backward in their academic path.  As parents and caregivers you can help you child maintain an upward growth by doing a few simple activities over the break from school:

  • Practice math facts DAILY with flashcards or websites
  • Read DAILY with your child and/or discuss your child’s silent reading with him/her.
  • Make simple trips around town an educational experience by discussing surroundings and “behind the scenes” happenings with your child.

I wish every family a wonderful holiday.  Stay safe, enjoy the time together and we will see you back at Southside on January 3, 2012.

Happy holidays,

Mrs. Susie Burkhardt
