WMS Speech and Drama

The Speech and Drama Team at WMS is for 6^th -8^th students.  There are 16 different categories in which students compete on the middle school level across the state. The categories in which they may compete are as follows: Broadcasting, Declamation, Dramatic Interpretation, Duo Acting, Duo Interpretation, Extemporaneous Speaking, Humorous Interpretation, Impromptu Speaking, Improv Duo, Interpretation of Literature, Oratory, Poetry, Prose, Public Speaking, Solo Acting and Storytelling. 

Students are coached how to deliver speeches emphatically and expressively Students competing in dramatic events are coached on vocal inflection, interpretation of the text and expression.  Speech and Drama causes students to come out of their comfort zone and think on their feet creating a very aware and forward thinking individual.  If this is something you are interested in, I encourage you to attend the Speech and Drama Workshop this summer.

Soccer Clinic 

Here’s a FREE SUMMER ACTIVITY   -  a soccer clinic for girls age 9-13

This is a great program to get kids moving, spark some interest in a healthy sport, and help students start thinking about college.

When: Wednesday, July 25th – 6:30-7:30pm

Where: Shelby County Soccer Complex

What: A free clinic for girl’s youth soccer players from the Shelby County area

We are inviting the girl’s youth soccer players from the Shelby County area to join us for an hour-long clinic on Wednesday, July 25th from 6:30-7:30pm. The coaching staff of Player Development Programs will run the session with the help of the Shelby County Lady Rockets Girl’s Soccer team and coaches

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kentuckiana & MASTER IT 

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kentuckiana:

For more than 100 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters has operated under the belief that every child has the inherent ability to succeed and thrive in life. As the nation’s largest donor and volunteer supported mentoring network, Big Brothers Big Sisters makes meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers “Bigs” and children “Littles”, ages 7 through 16, in communities across the country. We develop positive relationships that have a direct and lasting effect on the lives of young people.

MASTER IT (Mentoring African American Students to Effectively Reach Intentional Tomorrows):

MASTER IT is a community founded initiative supporting African American middle school students in Shelby County. Through generous funding from Metro United Way, the program focuses on preparing students for the challenges of advanced high school courses and encouraging higher education. It brings together educators, parents, schools, and the community to address persistent academic achievement gaps. Big Brothers Big Sisters adds their expertise in the field of mentoring to the project.

Mission & Vision:

Big Brothers Big Sisters provides children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one to one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever. We provide successful mentoring relationships for all children who need and want them, contributing to brighter futures, better schools, and stronger communities for all.

Our Programs Start Something:

National research has shown that positive relationships between Littles and their Bigs have a direct and measurable impact on children’s lives. By participating in our programs, Little Brothers and Sisters have reported:

                Getting along better with their families.

                Higher expectations for finishing high school and attending college (84%).

                Improving their grades and increasing their self-confidence (90%).  

What role does a Big play?

Having a Big Brother or Big Sister provides children with additional support by giving them a structured friendship with a caring adult. It is a safe and supportive way to spend time and have fun.

MLC High School JV Soccer 

This is open to any 7-8^th grade girl at West Middle that may be interested in playing High School JV soccer

Conditioning 6-7:30 every Tues. and Thurs. starting June 5 thur July 12

Tryouts July 16-17 6-8pm- Practice July 18-20 6-8pm

Camp July 23-27 at home (to keep cost down)6-8pm

Practice July 30- Aug 2 6-8pm

Soccerrama Aug 4-all day (everyone will need to help,players and parents)

Practice Aug 6-10 6-8pm.

Season starts week of Aug 13.

This is a tenitive schedule so everyone will know what is going on.

West Middle Spring Football

2012 West Middle Spring Football camp will be June 4^th through the 8^th from 6pm to 8pm on Collins Practice Field. This is for any West Middle student that will be going into the 7^th or 8^th grade next school year. All Participants must have a current sports physical to participate.

YSC Needs …

As the school year winds down and you are going through items PLEASE remember that the YSC is in great need of the following:

FROM THE DESK OF MRS. STIVERS 

This may be the last day of school, but the learning didn’t end. As we continue our intense focus on College and Career Readiness, WMS students were fortunate to host several guest speakers.  Speaker came to West to speak to 6^th graders on Friday and then came today to talk to the 7^th graders.

*Alice Creque, owner of Max Performance, shared with students the details about becoming a physical therapist.  She discussed the number of programs available in the state and what type of preparation students must have in order to be accepted to the rigorous programs. 

*Jason Rice, a Shelbyville detective, talked about general summer safety and inspired the students to have a fun and safe summer. 

*Kelly Samples shared her story of the night her life was changed when the car being driven by her brother Matt was it by a drunk driver, killing the passenger in the other car and changing the lives of her and Matt. She wanted the students to know that after the accident both went on to graduate from college. 

*Powell and Ashley Miller of Lindsey Wilson College exposed students to the many offerings of the private college and alerted students to the competitive nature of scholarship decisions. 

*Duanne Puckett, SCPS Public Relations Coordinator, shared her very touching life story about what her life was like before and after being hit by a drunk driver.  Talk about a life lesson.   

*The life lessons didn’t end there as Ms. Vivian Overall shared her life experiences with segregation in Shelby County and how she has adopted Nelson Mandela’s life philosophy of “Better Not Bitter.”   

*Finally, Mr. Mike Miller shared with career choices with an eager crowd who heard all about being a parole officer and realty. So, as you can see, school has not ended by any means.   

* Ms. Overall and Duanne “Bug” Puckett came to speak to the 6^th grade students on Friday and again today to speak to the 7^th grade.  

Both grades decided to take board member Mr. Sam Hinkle up on his challenge to participate in service learning projects.  A tree will be planted for former WMS 7^th grader, Devin Miller, who died in a car accident this past August.  A group of students cleaned the trail between WMS and the park.  Another group worked on the school garden in the back of the school.  We feel that by serving the surrounding community and others that our students have grown on a personal level! 

We are grateful to the community members who were willing to support WMS journey toward College and Career Readiness.  It takes people of many talents and gifts to grow our children!

Thank you to everyone who was able to attend the 6^th and 7^th grade award ceremony! We are so proud of all the accomplishments that our students were recognized for this year! 

We are sad to see the 7^th grade leave and head to Collins next year.   

Thank you to all the parents who sent food/drinks/plates for the end of the year cookout!! A lot of fun and a great way to end the year! 

Thanks to Mr. Stone our official “man on the grill” who grilled for the entire school!! 

And while we are on the subject…  

Thank you to everyone who made this year such a wonderful year. I cannot thank the parents, grandparents’, and volunteers enough for coming in and supporting West Middle YSC and our school. It is so important to your children to see your support!

I am so appreciative of you who were able to come to school for our many volunteer needs… Holiday Shop, Health Fair, Reality Store, KPREP testing, copying… just to name a few!

BOX TOPS 

A Huge thank you to Mrs. Collins, Mr. Osborne, Mr. Houseal, and Mr. Denton for volunteering to have a whip-cream pie smeared in their face …all for the sake of the BOX TOPS program!!! Due to 7^th grade speakers we had Mrs. Collins and Mr. Osborne as participates. The students did not hold back and in the end whip cream was all over our 2 teachers!! 

Nick Eades, Lane Reese, and Will Pumphrey were automatically entered for bringing in the most BOX TOPS for this contest. Matthew Hawkins and Shelby Arnold’s names were drawn out for the other 2 “throwers”. 

Please continue to collect BOX TOPS during the summer. BOX TOPS have been a very important sources of money that has helped the YSC students and their families. It is an easy way to help fund the YSC!! Remember…. Collect and save BOX TOPS !!!
