• A Statement from Featured Artist John Holtzworth

The following is an interpretation of my soft pastel drawing. It depicts the Mombacho Volcano and Lake Catarina, which are located in the districts of Granada and Masaya, which are in Nicaragua. The piece is a realistic style, made by sketching lightly with pencil and coloring over with layers of soft pastel. The purpose of the drawing is narrative. It tells a story about the eruption of the Mombacho Volcano. I was inspired to draw this certain lake and volcano because I have visited both. I swam in Lake Catarina and ziplined in the jungles on the Mombacho Volcano.

    Realistic Still Life Drawings

Students arranged small objects, sketched them using depth of field for proportion, created a light source and finished with a variation of shading and tinting for value. Realism, use of formal properties, skill and craftsmanship were important criteria for this assignment.

    Nonrepresentational Paintings

Painting students abandoned narration to freely experiment with the Principles of Design. Though nonrepresentational art does not depict recognizable images it may express concepts or the artist’s thoughts and feelings.
