Welcome to Cultivate, our Shelby County K-12 virtual learning academy!
Description:
The Cultivate Virtual Learning Academy is an independent learning pathway for students currently enrolled in Shelby County Public Schools. If you are not enrolled yet at SCPS, you can go ahead and apply to Cultivate, but if accepted, your next step will be enrolling in our district.
For students grades 6-12, we utilize the online curriculum digital platform Apex Learning. (For a great two-minute video overview of what Apex is like for a student, click here.)
For students grade K-5, the experience is different; they have a certified elementary teacher who schedules both synchronous and asynchronous online learning opportunities every day, all day.
Note that as part of their commitment to enroll and stay in Cultivate, all K-12 Cultivate students have to maintain coming in person periodically for advisory and various testing.
You must have reliable and consistent high-speed Internet and personal transportation to be a part of Cultivate (no buses are available or offered). Chromebooks will be provided for all Cultivate students, just as they are already lent to all other SCPS students.
For more information on Cultivate, please click here for Slides we used at a 3/31/22 informational meeting.
The deadline to apply for 2022-2023 enrollment in Cultivate was May 1, 2022. Current Cultivate students were informed by advisors that they had to reapply and be accepted in order to continue in Cultivate for the upcoming school year. Note that simply submitting an application does NOT mean you are accepted or enrolled in Cultivate; you must be notified of acceptance and complete an entrance interview before becoming officially enrolled in the program.
Purpose:
The purpose of Cultivate is to provide highly motivated, independent working students the opportunity to personalize their learning by continuing and completing their classwork in a virtual setting.
Is this a good fit for me?
Successful students participating in Cultivate demonstrate the following characteristics:
Highly motivated
Organized
Proactive
Responsible
Strong study skills
Effective Communicators (responding to texts/emails, asking for help when needed)
Independent working students
No significant struggles during previous virtual/SCPS@home/NTI schoolwork opportunities
**Once you have completed the application and we have collected the required documents, Mrs. Caytie Burgin- our program Learning Facilitator- will contact you and schedule your interview.
Feel free to contact Mrs. Shelley Mattmiller (our school counselor) or Mrs. Caytie Burgin (our Learning Facilitator) if you have any questions!
