Principal Jones Hocker
  • Dear Marnel C. Moorman Families,

My name is Donna Jones Hocker, and I am so excited to introduce myself as the principal of Marnel C. Moorman School.  I am honored to lead this new innovative learning center in our district. Over the past fifteen years, I have worked as a teacher and administrator, but I consider my most important role to be that of a child advocate.  I will spend lots of time with your children, getting to know their personalities, learning styles, and interests. I will celebrate their successes, big and small. I will encourage them every day and let them know they are important and have a special place in our school - a school where student voice and choice are valued.

I am excited to begin working with your child, and I look forward to the work we will do together.  As the old African Proverb states, “It takes a village to raise a child.” I want to see your children through your eyes.  I cannot wait to share with you the great things they will do here at Marnel C. Moorman. Of course, I will be here to work with you and your family should you need help navigating any aspect of the school day.

Marnel C. Moorman school is a dynamic learning environment organized into three collaborative neighborhoods: K - 5th grade, 6th/7th grade, and 8th grade.  Flexible grouping arrangements and project/problem-based learning are core tenets in creating challenging, meaningful, and engaging learning opportunities for our students. The innovative educational spaces in the building’s footprint promote collaboration and partnerships for all stakeholders.  Personalized learning is the foundational principle of our learning neighborhood model. Faculty and staff will collaborate with students, families, and the community to support social, emotional, physical, and academic growth. A key priority will be ensuring the needs of all students are met.

In closing, I am ready to work with the students, teachers, families, and community members of Shelby County to establish a shared vision for the students of Marnel C. Moorman School.  My door will always be open to all who have our learners at heart. I believe our children have the world at their fingertips, and I ask your support in empowering our students for future success.

    Warm Regards,

    Donna R. Jones Hocker
