...students be able to make and deliver “tool kits” for their students with additional supplies? I would like to prepare my students with small dry erase boards, manipulatives, etc. I’m not sure if it would be possible to borrow these items from school or if I would need to purchase them on my own.

Yes.  All students have the same school supply list.  SCPS@Home teachers will be ensuring that SCPS@Home students have the opportunity to pick up instructional materials each week to support the learning for the week.  You can work with your principal to develop a plan for pick up and delivery.  Your principal will also advise you on the availability of resources and materials.

The recommendation is that students should have their own supplies. If manipulatives are being used then they should be properly cleaned between students. Sharing of books is discouraged.

  • How frequently will student and staff bathrooms be cleaned and disinfected?

    Posted by:

All areas of the building will be disinfected daily.  High touch surfaces and frequently used areas, like bathrooms, wil be cleaned throughout the day, in addition to daily disinfection.  Additional custodial staff will be added to assist with the increase in cleaning and disinfecting of common and high touch areas. A misting machine with disinfectant will be used nightly in all common areas and classrooms.

  • How will mask non-compliance, by both students and teachers, be handled?

    Posted by:
Your school leadership team has been working diligently to develop plans to keep everyone safe.  As you return to school to work during the prep days, your school team will develop plans to model, teach and reinforce all safety guidelines from the Kentucky Healthy at School Guidelines.  It will be similar to how you teach and reinforce other behavioral expectations.  As a collaborative leader, your principal will welcome feedback on the initial plans from the experts who work with high school students everyday.

  • How will sick leave work for staff who are required to quarantine or have COVID-19?

    Posted by:

If exposed, tested and positive, the employee will receive a form of emergency sick leave through the Family First Coronavirus Response Act.  If quarantined, and able to work remotely, the employee would still be working and not have to use sick days.

If negative and not returning to work, the employee will take regular sick leave.

We have created the SCPS COVID Related Leave Decision Tree to help answer some of your questions.

The Kentucky Department of Education has guidance that SCPS will follow regarding leave.

You can read about the Family First Coronavirus Response Act which will govern decisions regarding  leave for our employees.

Here is a link to the Kentucky School Board Associations COVID leave information.

  • If we go back to NTI due to health reasons, will teachers be allowed to work from home?

    Posted by:

SCPS will follow the recommendation of the Governor, KDE and the CDC when making decisions about the safety and health conditions of employees returning to a building.  If it is safe for you to return to the building to work and teach NTI, we know having resources and colleagues close by is the optimum choice.  However, if it is recommended for people to quarantine and work from home, we would follow that recommendation as we did in March.

  • If you are working with one of the younger students that does not have to wear a mask and they...

    Posted by:

...test positive, do you have to quarantine?  Also, would these teachers have to use their sick days every time they would have to quarantine due to a student contracting COVID?

Teachers working with students who are either too young or medically unable to wear a face mask will be provided an additional barrier with a face shield. We understand the difficulty in social distancing at the preschool age and are encouraging administrators to reduce the class sizes to accommodate additional space within the classroom. These measure will help to prevent the teaching staff from requiring quarantine if there is a positive case from a student. However, if that occurs and the health department determines that the teaching staff should quarantine then measures have been put into place so that the staff are not penalized by using their sick time. If exposure happens outside of school, the staff would need to provide documentation to the HR department in order to avoid using their sick time.

  • The latest information from the CDC indicates that the virus is not only transmitted with airborne..

    Posted by:

...respiratory droplets, but is also transmitted through microscopic aerosols. Given that information,  can you discuss how the school buildings will increase room circulation and if the HVAC systems will be able to filter any virus laden aerosols to help prevent the building wide distribtution of the virus ?

To not only improve ventilation but also to help reduce virus and allergens in the air, we are employing several strategies. The recommended humidity level of 50% can be achieved only with exterior doors and windows closed. Filters will be monitored more closely and changed more often.  Heating and cooling systems will operate for longer periods of time before buildings are occupied each day to improve air flow. I have included Mrs. Barkley on this response because she has been working closely with the facilities team to address these issues.  They are meeting with every school principal as well.

Each school is working on a schedule that will lower the contact and yet allow students to have library class, music, art, etc. The plan will be based on number of students per teacher. Again, this may not look like past school schedules. The planning is in process and teachers will have a voice in that at their schools from August 12 - 25.

  • What specific guidelines will be used to determine "at risk" after being exposed to someone who test

    Posted by:
    1. The contact tracers will have the final determination about who is at risk but they consider things such as the duration of time spent within a proximity closer than 6 feet, whether or not one or both parties had on a mask, when the possible exposure occurred in relation to the beginning of symptoms--specifically if it occurred within 48 hours of the onset of symptoms.

  • What steps have we taken as a district to look into our ventilation systems?

    Posted by:
    1. We are using several strategies recommended by the guidelines given to us by KDE in relation to our HVAC systems.  To not only improve ventilation but also to help reduce virus and allergens in the air, we are monitoring the humidity level to maintain 50% or less.  This can be achieved only with exterior doors and windows closed. Filters will be monitored more closely and changed more often.  Heating and cooling systems will operate for longer periods of time before buildings are occupied each day to improve air flow.
    2. In order to maintain to 50% or less humidity level recommended by the KDE guidelines for proper ventilation, we will not open exterior doors and windows.

Some items may need to be removed and rearranged to accommodate your class numbers. Your principal has worked closely with facilities to follow the guidance provided to us by KDE.

  • Will teachers be allowed to bring their children to PD and prep days August 12 - 25?

    Posted by:

We are asking teachers to secure childcare for these prep days as we prepare a safe environment and work on procedures for our incoming students.

We are attempting to open Shelby County Public School Daycares for staff only students from August 12-August 25.  Depending on need, we will determine which centers will open for this time frame.  Daycare for Kindergarten-5th students will follow the guidance documents published by the state. In order to safely open, children will remain in the same group of ten children all day without interacting with another group. We are only offering 5 days a week at $120 per child or $240 for the 10 days. Center hours are from 7:30am-4pm.  We are working with our school cafeterias to provide breakfast, lunch and a snack each day. This is a service offered by SCPS.  The cost of the service will help us "break even" because there is no funding source for employees and food. We hope this helps our teachers who need daycare services on these days. Afterschool care programs are also being planned for teachers and our community.

Here is a google form to begin the registration process for SCPS daycare for the dates of August 12-August 25.  Registration must be completed by August 6th at 12:00 pm so that we can plan.

Afterschool care will be available beginning August 26th.  Please use THIS FORM to register your child for this service.

  • Will teachers perform daily disinfectant procedures? If so, what will this entail?

There will be additional custodial services in each school building to help with cleaning and sanitation. Each building leadership team will make a determination on classroom cleaning and if teaching staff need to help with that procedure--such as if students change classes.

Bus riders will have their temperature taken immediately upon entering the building--before reporting to their class.
