What begins with an egg is growing into a multi-year learning experience for students at Shelby Academy.🐣

Cultivate students in 10th and 11th grade are beginning Phase One of a three-year agriculture project focused on hands-on learning and real-world application. Students are currently incubating and hatching chickens, geese, and ducks while exploring hydroponics and greenhouse design. Along the way, they are examining plant and animal relationships and studying egg development from incubation through animal care, giving them a deeper understanding of agricultural systems.

Plans include hosting student-led field trips, selling eggs at a farmers market, and exploring farm-to-table cuisine. Throughout the project, students will work alongside a variety of community partners, strengthening their presentation and communication skills while gaining experience in agriculture, sustainability, and entrepreneurship.

Shelby Academy teacher Caytie Burgin received a $500 mini grant last February to use as she saw fit to educate her students, and this project is the result! The Education Foundation awarded Round 2 of mini grants today , and looks forward to continuing its support of innovative learning opportunities across the district.
