School Safety Information

Shelby County Public Schools is committed to ensuring the safety and security of our students, employees, and campus visitors. As such, our school has implemented specific plans to be proactive. These measures include, but are not limited to:

  1. We have a School Resource Officer provided by Shelbyville PD stationed on our campus.

  2. Our exterior doors are locked during the school day.

  3. All visitors are electronically admitted after they have been screened. Screening includes providing a valid ID and an acceptable reason to be on campus.

  4. All classroom doors are locked during instructional time.

  5. The Office of the State School Security Marshal has compliance officers who conduct unannounced inspections of our school to ensure safety protocols are in place.

  6. Our school has a trained Threat Assessment Team.

  7. Staff and students practice drills regarding lockdown, fire, severe weather, and earthquake procedures as a part of our Emergency Management Plan.

  8. Law enforcement partners with our schools to provide additional assistance in times of need.

  9. We have a STOP Tipline linked directly to KY Homeland Security and our school officials for anyone to make a report anonymously: students, school staff, parents, guardians, grandparents, law enforcement, and the community at large.  If You See or Hear Something, Say Something.

  10. Our school district regularly works with the Kentucky Center for School Safety and the Office of the State School Security Marshal to ensure best safety practices are implemented.

  11.  We have counselors stationed at each school to help with mental health needs.

  12.  Our staff is trained annually in active shooter safety protocols.

When there is a potentially dangerous incident in the community or possible threat outside of the building. Students and staff do not go outside. Entry and exit to the school are restricted. We refer to this as a soft lockdown. When there is a possible threat inside the building, students and staff remain locked in classrooms hidden from view until released by law enforcement officers.
As a family please make sure that your contact information is correct in Infinite Campus. Download our Thrillshare APP and say “yes” to push notifications from your child’s school.

Make sure you are connected to ROOMS.

OUR PRIORITY

Our priority is to protect students and staff. As soon as we have the correct information and details, SCPS will begin sending information about the situation. Check your email, voicemail, and text messages for urgent communication from the school or the district.

  • Please keep in mind that first reports are often incomplete and inaccurate. Try to remain calm and rely on the information you will receive directly from the school or district.

  • Avoid coming to the school or scene of the emergency until notified by the school or district that it is safe. Arriving on site before it is secure can interfere with the emergency response and might put you in danger.

  • During a serious emergency, the sound vibration, or conversation from a cellphone could put students in danger. As hard as it is, please refrain from calling or texting your child. If your student contacts you, stay calm and reassuring and encourage them to follow the directions of school staff and emergency responders. Ask them to turn off their cellphone and not use social media.

  • Please do not speculate and spread rumors on social media.

Families will receive specific instructions from the school or district.

What type of actions will the school take?

High Alert

High Alert: If there is a threat or a potentially dangerous incident in the community, classes continue, but students and staff do not go outside. There may be increased adult and/or law enforcement presence around the perimeter of the building.

School Bus Emergencies

If a school bus is involved in an accident that requires an emergency response, school and district staff will report to the scene.

Students will be transported back to campus to reunite with their families.

Weather Related Emergencies

Shelby County Public Schools may have to change routines or daily schedules in the district due to wintry forecasts, severe weather, or poor road conditions. As we approach the winter months, make a plan “B” for days that students cannot attend school. SCPS will announce through WAVE3, WDRB, WHAS11, and WLKY news, social media, the district’s website, and phone calls, texts, and emails to our families through mass communication.

Please take time to update your family’s contact information and communication preferences in Infinite Campus to ensure you receive our notifications.

Shelby County Public Schools will always prioritize safety and student learning. Below are the choices for severe weather days:

  • Non-traditional instruction

  • Cancel School

  • Delay the Start of School

  • Dismiss School Early

Our preference is to let families know of any changes to the school day at least by the evening before. However, the weather is unpredictable and we may need to wait until the morning of the weather event. We have a team of district employees who monitor the weather conditions. They drive the roads and check the precipitation, the outdoor temps, the wind chill, and the forecast to decide.
