Powell Miller Takes On new Role As District Activities Coordinator
You may know Powell Miller as the Athletic Director for Martha Layne Collins High School, but on July 1st, he will step into a new role as the Shelby County Public Schools District Activities Coordinator. In this position, Mr. Miller will serve as the point of contact for district curricular and co-curricular activities including athletics, assist schools with coordinating, developing, and scheduling student activities across the district, and oversee board and KHSAA policies related to our district activities. Moreover, in this position, Mr. Miller will ensure that coaches and volunteers receive the required training. He will also assist each school with the organization and scheduling of all extra-curricular events at the high school, middle school, and community facilities.
Mike Clark, Director of Student Services, said, “Powell has helped strengthen the culture at MLCHS. He is knowledgeable, experienced, responsible, and organized. His expertise in engaging students in valuable school activities will be an asset to the entire district.”
At Collins High School, Mr. Miller coordinated, scheduled, and managed twenty-six athletic programs, ninety-four coaches, and more than five hundred student-athletes He increased department sponsorships and added greater visibility of programs to help build school culture. As a collaborator, Mr. Miller worked with a variety of stakeholders to successfully execute KHSAA competitions in the district, the region, and the state.
Mr. Miller said, “As a Shelby County native this position gives me the opportunity to give back to the community that poured into my life and made me the person I am today. I am a proud 2004 Shelby County High School graduate and have been blessed to work at Collins High School for the last 6 years. I feel this position allows me the chance to help lead and mentor SCPS students and have an impact on their success at all levels.”
Mr. Miller holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Sports Administration from the University of Louisville and a Master of Business Administration from Lindsey Wilson College. Before coming to MLCHS, Mr. Miller served as the Wide Receivers Coach and Special Teams Coordinator at Lindsey Wilson College.
“In this new position, I hope to expand on the opportunities we have in place and give the best athletic and activities experience possible for all kids in our community. Athletic and activity involvement is such a critical component of the overall educational experience that a student has at SCPS. I hope to find more opportunities for students to be involved in whatever their passions may be.”
Mr. Miller begins his new role on July 1st, 2022.
