Dr. Adam Hicks to Serve as Director of Curriculum and Assessment
Dr. Adam Hicks Named Director of Curriculum and Assessment
Known for his bow ties and colorful tennis shoes, Simpsonville Principal, Dr. Adam Hicks will now work with the Shelby County Public Schools Student Achievement team as the Director of Curriculum and Assessment. Dr. Hicks said he wanted this job because, “it will give me an opportunity to meaningfully work with students, teachers, and administrators across our district.”
Dr. Hicks began his career as an English teacher at Bryan Station High School, moved to Shelby County High School to teach English, and served as a National Education Consultant for the National Math and Science Initiative. Having served as assistant principal at Simpsonville, he moved into the position of principal of Simpsonville Elementary School and has served in this capacity for six years.
Dr. Hicks received his Bachelors of Arts in Education/English and his Masters of Arts in Education at the University of Kentucky. He is a National Board Certified Teacher in the area of English Language Arts. Dr. Hicks obtained his Education Specialist Degree from the University of the Cumberlands and recently completed his Educational Doctorate in Educational Leadership and Organizational Development from the University of Louisville.
Dr. Hicks said of his appointment, “I wanted to be the Director of Curriculum and Assessment because it will give me an opportunity to meaningfully work with students, teachers and administrators across our district. Having served as a teacher and administrator for Shelby County Public Schools, I have also served as a national educational consultant for almost ten years, and have facilitated teacher and student learning opportunities across the country. I hope to pull on all of these experiences to positively impact student learning and teacher efficacy in our district.”
Shelby County Public Schools has received international recognition for our Profile of a Graduate. Dr. Hicks will be responsible for implementing the district’s work with the Profile of a Graduate and the Exhibitions and Defenses of Learning as well as managing the standardized testing requirements set forth by the state. “Our district’s work with Exhibitions and Defenses of Learning is just as meaningful as any pen and paper test a child will take. I hope to highlight and celebrate multiple measures of student success.” Dr. Hicks will work to continue the work for an authentic and personalized curriculum for the needs of our students and to give students and teachers a voice in how students are learning.
Leigh Ann Kieper, Secretary at Simpsonville Elementary, said of Dr. Hicks, “He will be a great asset to our district as Director of Curriculum and Assessment and will help move us to the next level as a district.”
Dr. Hicks and his wife Kisha are proud Shelby County residents. They have three children, Darcy, Nora, and Wyatt. The oldest is starting as a Kindergartener at Simpsonville in the fall.
Simpsonville SBDM will begin the search for a new principal for Simpsonville immediately.
