SCHS Choir Students Selected as Members of National Honor Ensembles
Three Shelby County High School choir students, under the direction of Ms. Courtney Sturgill, traveled to Washington, DC this past weekend to participate i the National Music Educators Association's National Honors Choir. Isaac Montgomery, Hannah Yates, and Paige Boien were in the mixed choir of the All National Honors Ensembles. Only about 550 students from the nation were chosen for ensembles, such as jazz band, concert band, symphony orchestra, mixed choir, guitar ensemble, and modern band. Nine in total were from Kentucky. This experience was part of the National Association for Music Educators conference.
Ms. Sturgill was chosen as an official chaperone and was in charge of 24 mixed choir students from across the nation. Students with financial needs were sponsored by the Country Music Association Foundation to make sure that all students could attend.
Dr. Frances Fonza, the former SCHS Choir Teacher, served as the guest conductor. She is now residing and teaching in Washington, DC. Ms. Sturgill said, "Dr. Fonza is so humble, encouraging, and inspiring as a conductor. I'm glad I had the chance to watch her work with students." Dr. Fonza also conducted the junior high All-State Choir this past year.
