School Board Approves Calendar for 2019 - 2020 School Year

The Shelby County Board of Education voted on the calendar for the 2019-2020 school year at the October 11th meeting.  Mike Clark presented the results of a parent poll that showed 67% of those polled preferred Calendar A. A calendar committee, consisting of parents, staff, and administrators, are tasked with developing a 175 instructional day calendar considering instructional time, holidays, professional development and other events.  With the opening of the Marnel C. Moorman school scheduled for August of 2019, school officials asked the calendar committee to consider a later start date to give time to finish the project.

Calendar A, the calendar approved by the board, has a beginning start date of August 21.  With the late start date, 2019 - 2020 will be a different year for breaks. Fall break will consist of a one week break from October 14 -- 18.  Holiday break in December will be December 23 -- January 1. Spring break reverts to one week from March 30 -- April 3. For 2020-21, the expectation is to return to the two week fall break and two week spring break.

We hope this notice will help families plan for vacations, college visits and appointments to help protect student instructional time.
