District Plans Mastery Learning Conference: Keynote Speaker Alcine Mumby

(Shelbyville, Kentucky) Shelby County Public Schools is hosting a Mastery Learning Conference August 3rd - 6th from 8:00 am - 3:30 pm at Martha Layne Collins High School, 801 Discovery Blv. Elementary and Secondary teachers will gather to explore questions that prepare them to continue the work SCPS has begun in mastery learning while preparing for structures to enable teachers in the SCPS@School and SCPS@Home learning options this fall.

Tracy Huelsman, Staff Developer for SCPS, has planned the event with her team. In order to keep participants safe during the conference, SCPS is following the guidelines set forth by KDE and the CDC. Masks will be worn and social distancing will occur during the event.  Tracy said, "We will model the type of structure we will see in the classroom with social distancing in 'safe at school' and 'safe at home' structures."

The Keynote Speaker for this event is Alcine Mumby, Deeper Learning Coach for Envision Learning Partners.  Alcine is a dedicated educator who has spent the last twenty years teaching and leading public K - 12 schools all over the country.  She currently supports and coaches district and school leaders to develop high-quality performance and assessment systems that center student-led demonstrations of learning and metacognition from an anti-racist equity stance.  Prior to coaching, Alcine taught Humanities at one of the first small schools in the Bronx where project-based learning and portfolio defenses served as the foundation of instruction.  Afterward, Alcine became a founding principal of Envision Academy in Oakland, an administrator in several small middle and high schools in Atlanta and DC, and a leadership coach in DC, Charlotte, and Philadephia.  Alcine earned her BA in English Education from NYU and a Master's in Curriculum Studies and Teacher Education from Stanford University.  When she's not listening to podcasts or making banana pudding, Alcine enjoys being an auntie to her adorable niece and three nephews.

Some of the questions the participants will explore with Alcine and Tracy include:

  • What is my role in bringing the Strategic Leadership Plan and Profile of a Graduate to life?
  • What is the Purpose of Defenses and What Supports are Essential?
  • Why are Assessment Literacy and Mastery Learning Tools Essential?
  • How does Standards-Based Reporting Support Mastery Learning?
