COVID-19 Update for June 11, 2021

The long awaited announcement came from Governor Beshear on Friday, June 19th, 2021, lifting COVID-19 mandates in Kentucky. This included the Healthy@work and Healthy@school mandates. While we as a district will continue to monitor recommendations from the CDC regarding best practices for preventing the spread of COVID-19, Shelby County Public Schools will no longer require staff or students to wear masks. We understand that each family has individual circumstances that may leave some parents, students, and staff not yet feeling comfortable around others without a mask. Anyone who wishes to continue to wear a mask will be supported and permitted to do so.
While this is a huge step in returning to a normal school year in the fall, we do ask that you continue to monitor for any symptoms of illness which could be contagious to others (fever, new cough, sore throat, vomiting, etc.) and remain home should you or your child have any of those. We will continue to encourage frequent hand washing, maintain seating charts, and will conduct contact tracing should new cases be diagnosed. Those who have had COVID-19 within the last 90 days or who have received both doses of a COVID-19 vaccine will not be subject to quarantine if exposed. SCPS will follow the CDC guidance regarding contact tracing and will stop as soon as allowed to do so.  Daily updates on COVID-19 cases within SCPS will no longer be posted on the district website and the state will no longer record school district cases.
The CDC is expected to update their recommendations for schools in the next few weeks. Once those recommendations are available, SCPS will carefully review them and update our plan  as needed.
COVID-19 vaccinations will not be required to attend school. Parents are encouraged to discuss the vaccine with their child’s pediatrician should they have any questions regarding the necessity for their child.
Thank you for all you have done and continue to do to support our students. I hope you enjoy your summer and as always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
