SCHS Dance Team Wins Bid to Nationals
Shelby County High School Dance Team has an opportunity to dance at the National Dance Alliance Nationals in Orlando, Florida. While this is a life-changing opportunity for the team of fifteen students, it comes with a hefty cost. Each dancer needs $1300 for their room, transportation, admission, food, and a day at one of the Universal Studios parks. They will attend this event on Wednesday, March 6th - March 11th of 2024.
Shelby County High School Dance Team won this opportunity by attending a dance camp to prepare them for their season. On the first day, the team learns a dance, and on the fourth day of camp, they compete against the other teams in attendance. During this competition, the SCHS Dance Team won every award against fourteen other teams. Some of the individual awards included twenty-seven superior ribbons, three excellent ribbons, one award for technique, two awards for spirit, three All-American Nominees, two All-American Team members, and three awards for showmanship. The team won a National Dance Association Staff Choice for Overall Excellence in Leadership, a Team Award, Superior Showmanship, a Gold National Championship Bid, a Superior Team Routine, and NFHS Squad Credentialing.
Coach Deion Davis said, “SCHS Dance Team has never been to nationals. It would be a great opportunity for the student dancers to see other teams, connect with college coaches, and network with people from across the country. Competing on a national level would give the team a chance to be critiqued by professional judges and meet other dancers, as well as experience team bonding at a new level. This opportunity will also help build the team for the future.”
Because of the extensive cost per person, the SCHS Dance Team is asking for sponsorship from our community. If you would like to sponsor the team on this historic opportunity, please contact Cyndi Chaney, Public Relations Coordinator at Shelby County Public Schools.
Coach Davis said, “If 25 organizations donated $1000 we would have the experience covered for the girls. If we can get to half of that, our community will help lower the cost of the experience for the team and the families of the dance team.”
The deadline for the payment to Nationals is January 15th, 2024. We hope you will consider sponsoring the team.
