District Shows Support of Dr. Sugg's Fight Against Acute Myeloid Leukemia

On Thursday, February 15th, Dr. Sally Sugg announced her retirement effective at the end of this school year.

On Monday, February 19th, Dr. Sugg began treatment for the fight of her lifetime against Acute Myeloid Leukemia.
Dr. Sugg will require a stem cell (bone marrow) transplant and blood transfusions as part of her fight.

In an effort to show support for Dr. Sugg and her journey in fighting AML, Shelby County Public Schools is working with the National Marrow Donor Program (formerly known as Be the Match) and the Red Cross. We will sponsor a bone marrow registry and a blood drive on Friday, March 15th from 12:00 pm - 6:00 pm at the Blair Center.

To become a part of the National Bone Marrow Registry, no appointment is needed. You are eligible if you are between the ages of 18-40 and meet the health criteria. You will answer some confidential health questions and self-swab your cheek. 90% of the time, donating stem cells requires something similar to donating blood. A relatively simple task to save someone's life. FAQ about joining the Registry. Some of us are "over-qualified" for the registry, so those who are over 40 can help by donating blood.

Participants can register to give blood at  https://www.redcrossblood.org/give.html/drive-results?zipSponsor=ShelbyCountySchools or you can walk in between 12:00 pm and 6:00 pm . Donors should be at least 17 years old and meet the medical criteria (Can I donate?).

Snacks and drinks will be provided following your mouth swab and/or blood donation.

T-shirts supporting Shelby Strong #TeamSally will be given out until they are gone.

The Red Cross will give away a $10 e-gift card to a pet supply merchant of your choice! Give blood, treat your pet and make a paw-sitive impact this spring. PLUS, you will automatically be entered for a chance to win a $3K gift card (5 winners) in March.

If you cannot attend the blood drive but wish to donate financially to the Red Cross or the National Marrow Donor Program, please use the links below.

Please share the attached flyer and this information with your friends, family, church, and throughout the community! Dr. Sugg has dedicated her entire career to being a champion for students, teachers, school support staff and education. She needs our help and for us to rally together for her. Let's show Dr. Sugg that she has our support and that we are behind her 100%.
