Greetings Team PSE Families,
This time last year I had just attended the Genius Hour PD on “Passion Projects” that had my wheels turning the entire time. During that day I learned about how students are given a designated amount of time each week to work on their own innovative projects and ideas in the classroom that give them the freedom to create and explore. I kept thinking...“I wanted my students to be engaged in their learning like that. I wanted students to be invested in what they're learning. I wanted them to "own" their learning the way the kids in those video did. I wanted this for my own child.”
I am coming off of an educational high because according to author Bob Lenz our students have just completed “one of the highest forms of learning…creation. The act of creation allows for the deepest expression of understanding.” Our "Love of Learning Exhibitions" were really a deep expression of learning. We showcased everything from passion projects, artifacts from PBL units, to strong arguments for/against causes. It was our first attempt, but boy did we meet the challenge head on. I can't wait to see where we go from here. I am so proud of the entire team.
Our “thirsty” students learned more because they were invested in something, they learned more because they actively did something and had to talk about their learning. I know it was uncomfortable for our teachers to be “forced” off of the ledge, but… boy it felt good when the net appeared to catch us all.
To you, our beloved families, thank you for you coming out to support our Love of Learning Exhibitions and providing us with needed feedback during Coffee and Conversation this month. We appreciate your love and support of our school family. If you would like to provide us with feedback and haven't gotten to do so please feel free to email me.
As always...we'll continue to love each other, learn together, & lead the way with your support,
