OpenGate

Dear Shelby County Community,

At Shelby County Public Schools, the safety and well‑being of our students and staff remain our highest priority. Each day, families entrust us with their children, and we take that responsibility with the utmost seriousness. As part of our ongoing commitment to maintaining safe, welcoming, and secure learning environments, the district will soon implement OpenGate Weapons Detection Systems in our secondary schools. Many school districts across Kentucky and throughout the country have already adopted OpenGate systems as an added layer of security. After careful research, consultation, and review, our Board of Education has chosen this system because of its effectiveness, efficiency, and its ability to support a safe school environment without creating unnecessary delays or disruptions for students.

OpenGate is an advanced, walk‑through weapons detection system designed to identify items that pose a safety risk while allowing the normal flow of students and visitors to continue moving safely and efficiently. Unlike airport-style metal detectors, OpenGate does not require emptying pockets, removing bags, or stopping to be screened. Students simply walk through the system, and it quickly scans for specific types of threats.

The decision to introduce OpenGate is part of a larger safety plan supported by the Shelby County Board of Education.

The system serves as

  • A strong deterrent that helps prevent dangerous items from entering our schools.

  • A proactive safety measure aligned with best practices statewide and nationally.

  • An added layer of protection within the district’s comprehensive safety approach.

Our goal is to ensure that every student, staff member, and family member feels safe and confident while learning, teaching, and participating in school activities.

We understand that safety is a shared responsibility, and we appreciate your partnership as we continue strengthening the security of our schools. If you have questions about the OpenGate system or the district’s safety measures, please do not hesitate to contact your school’s principal or our district office.

Thank you for your continued trust and support of Shelby County Public Schools.

Sincerely,

Dr. Joshua Matthews
