Shelbyville, KY – Shelby County Public Schools (SCPS) is pleased to announce that Josh Rhodes has been named the district’s new Communications Director. Rhodes brings a strong background in education, leadership, and community engagement to this new role, which will support transparent, timely, and collaborative communication across the district.

Rhodes currently serves as the Director of Community Schools through a grant-funded position with the Prichard Committee, where he has worked to build partnerships and support student success through community-based strategies. That role will soon be posted to find his successor.

Prior to his current position, Rhodes served SCPS in several leadership capacities, including Principal and Assistant Principal at Shelby East Middle School and Interim Assistant Principal at Marnel C. Moorman School. Before joining SCPS, he worked with Jefferson County Public Schools and the Kentucky Department of Education as an Educational Recovery Specialist, supporting school improvement efforts. His career in education began in the classroom, where he taught fourth and fifth grades in JCPS.

“I’m excited to continue serving in a role that actively engages with and collaborates alongside the Shelby County community,” said Rhodes. “Clear, authentic communication is essential to building trust and supporting the success of our students and schools.”

Superintendent Josh Matthews welcomed Rhodes to his new position, saying, “Josh’s deep understanding of education, his leadership within our schools, and his strong relationships in the community make him the ideal person to lead our communications work.”

Dr. Matthews said, “We had a very strong pool of applicants, and several individuals brought impressive qualifications to the process. Mr. Rhodes distinguished himself through his diverse background and broad range of experiences. He has worked in the private sector in marketing, served as a principal in our district, and most recently held the position of Director of Community Schools. His deep understanding of our school system, strong community connections, and leadership experience make him exceptionally well-suited for this role. Cyndi Skellie, our current Public Relations Coordinator who is retiring this year, has done an outstanding job leading our public relations efforts, and Mr. Rhodes will build on the strong foundation she has established.”

Josh Rhodes will work closely with Victor Malone who has served in the public relations department this year.

Rhodes will begin his new role on July 1st, 2025.
