This letter is to inform you about a threat received at Shelby County High School this morning. Our school is committed to the safety of all our students. We also want to clearly communicate with parents about safety issues when they arise.
This morning, there was a threat made to Shelby County High School. After conferring with the superintendent’s office and local law enforcement, Shelby County High School was immediately placed on Lockdown. All other schools on Rocket Lane were placed on Soft Lockdown, and all other Shelby County Public School sites were placed on High Alert.
“I want to thank all of our law enforcement agencies who responded this morning. We have the best law enforcement and emergency personnel in the state, and they did an outstanding job,” said Superintendent Dr. Josh Matthews. Kentucky State Police, the Shelbyville Police Department, and the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office were swift to respond and support our efforts on-site at Shelby County High School. At 11:23 am, an All-Clear was given to all our schools by law enforcement. “I want to thank our amazing team as well. Our school and district administrators, along with our school staff, did an outstanding job. I am proud of how smoothly things ran and the swift communication we were able to get out to our public.”
In an unrelated incident, an adult was apprehended on the Milestone Campus. That individual was in possession of firearms and was immediately taken into custody by local law enforcement. Law enforcement has assured us that this was unrelated to the threat made by phone to Shelby County High School.
All threats to our schools or students are taken seriously and investigated thoroughly. As a district, we want families to have access to the facts so you can discuss them with your child and emphasize the seriousness of this issue, should you choose.
We want to thank our local law enforcement for their swift response and efforts to keep SCPS students and staff safe. We also thank the staff at Shelby County High School for their level-headed response to the situation.
There will be a joint video statement between Dr. Matthews and the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office released later today.

UPDATE: As we continue to work with local law enforcement, we want to provide consistent updates for families. We still believe there is no immediate threat to our students' safety.
Out of an abundance of caution, Shelby County High School will remain on Lockdown, Rocket Lane schools will remain on Soft Lockdown, and all other SCPS schools will remain on High Alert.
